Magic

Every spring, my favorite art festival in Birmingham, The Magic City Art Connection comes along.  I have been a huge fan of this show for years.  This year, I was proud to be a part of it.  We had an informational booth about City Arts Boutique in the “Cultural District” portion of the show.

The past three days were filled of chatting with people about City Arts, explaining the concept of the combined gallery/shop/studio and the fact that we are 100% local Birmingham artists and part of the newly developed 55th Place Arts business district in Woodlawn.  It was great to be able to have the opportunity to get the word out to so many interested folks.

I also had on display a Birmingham-themed quilt that I made my husband as a sampling of the work I do in the studio.

This all would not have been possible without the help of several of our artists and friends that pitched in to help man the booth and cover the shop.  So, to all of you who helped, thank you so much for your help!!

Not only was it fun being a part of the art show, but the show itself was indeed magical.  There were so many wonderful artists there and the weather was beautiful.  Linn Park is a perfect setting to see the art and enjoy the City.

And, the magic is not over!  We happen to have several of the artists who were showing at the Magic City Art Connection represented in our gallery: Claire Cormany, Jill Marlar, Christy Turnipseed and Ashley Lindsey.

Thanks Magic City Art Connection for an inspiring weekend!

We had a great group and everyone painted beautiful paintings!  Thanks to everyone who joined in.  Stay tuned for the next date and make plans to come!

Planting Seeds

Yesterday, City Arts was excited to host A Craft Show by Crestwood Day School benefiting the Brother Bryan Mission, a homeless shelter for men.

There were so many good things going on, I’m not sure which to tell you about first!  The Crestwood Day School is a wonderful school based on the Charlotte Mason teaching philosophy.  Stephanie Kling, a dear friend and Crestwood resident began the school several years ago in her basement.  Since then the school has grown and has moved to Third Presbyterian Church in downtown Birmingham.  Brother Bryan was once the pastor of Third Presbyterian Church and is known for his work with the poor and homeless.  The Brother Bryan Mission was founded to carry on this work.

The students of Crestwood Day School all made the sweetest crafts to sell for the fundraiser.  Not only was it a special charity to support, but seeing these children learn about giving at such an early age was inspirational.  Seeds of giving were being planted in young minds that no doubt will reap many harvests in the future.

And speaking of seeds, one of the precious crafts that were being sold was a very cute burlap pouch filled with wildflower seeds.  We still have some at City Arts Boutique if you are interested!

It warms my heart to see the gallery filled with people and buzzing with activity for a great cause.  Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Brother Bryan Mission and the Crestwood Day School!

Change is good.

One of the first things I wanted to do when I knew I was going to open City Arts is to put flowers outside.  Turns out, there are a lot more things to do when you start a new business than I was thinking about. :) So, I have just now been able to get to make this happen.

This morning, my husband and I had a “date” at 7:30 am (our son had spent the night with his grandparents).  We made coffee (well, and he made tea… still working on him to drink coffee with me) and we went to the shop to put out the planters and plant the flowers.  All of you gardeners know how good it feels to plant something new in the spring.  Beautiful weather, sunlight, cool breeze, and fresh flowers.  Can’t beat it.

In an interview I saw a few months back with Maya Angelou, she was asked how it was to live in Harlem since the sixties. She answered that she knew change was starting to come when she started seeing flowers in the window boxes.

To me, being able to plant flowers on this corner in Woodlawn is a privilege.  I hope that not only will it add beauty to the entrance of the gallery, but that to all the passersby, it is a symbol of the change that is happening in Woodlawn.
